  • Digital Collection

2002-039-117a

This fragment of an airmail letter card was carried on the B.O.A.C. Lockheed Lodestar plane “LYNDHURST” G-AGBW which was lost on route from Juba in Sudan to Nairobi in Kenya on 29th Nov 1944.  The plane had crashed in the Aberdare Mountains in northern Kenya and there were no survivors.  The crash site and the mail were not located before the start of 1945 and then salvaged mail received the oval cachet in violet over a period of several months.  This item was dated 6th Mar 1945 and signed by Capt. I. H.C. Godfrey.  Similar cachets are reported dated 8th Jan 1945 and also signed by Capt. Godfrey.
