An interesting air letter posted from the UK to Western Australia on 18 November 1974 with the cachet DELAYED EN ROUTE/AIRCRAFT HIJACK. This airletter addressed to Western Australia with strike of two line cachet in violet. BOAC VC10 aircraft hijacked by Palestinian terrorists at Dubai where one stewardess was killed. After negotiation seven terrorists were released and the aircraft was flown on to Tunis where the passengers were released. The plane was piloted by Fl/off Michael Wood as far as Tunis. Capt Futcher then piloted the plane onto Perth, western Australia and the delayed mail was delivered.
Two mail items were signed by Wood, and one of these went to auction with a guide price of £750 to £900. (Ref: Channel Islands Postal Bid Sales, sale No. 10, 26th June 2009)
