Alfred Smith 1892

  • Digital Collection

1989-055-011

Another example of a stamped to order envelope with a ½d embossed stamp prepared for Alfred Smith & Co of Bath who had premises opposite the Roman Baths in Bath, as shown in the vignette on the left hand side of this envelope.  The embossed stamp is much smaller than the other embossed stamps of this period, being taken from the same die that was first used on postcards in 1872.  It has been cancelled with the Bath duplex dated 18 February 1893.  The ½d postage rate which was only for use in sending printed matter, has been uprated to 1d, the standard letter rate of the period.
