The Brandenburg Gate

A picture postcard used 17 May 1930 (although the card is annotated 17/6/30) showing a view of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Card carried from Friedrichshafen (departed 18 May) to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (arrived 25 May 1930) via Pernambuco by airship “Graf Zeppelin” on first stage of a three leg flight via USA and return to Germany. Red circular cachet reads “LUFTSCHIFF GRAF ZEPPELIN / SUDAMERIKAFAHRT 1930” around view of Rio with palm tree and airship overhead. The European air mail service was relatively cheap and was becoming more reliable by this time.
