This envelope from Nigeria to Birmingham, England was on board a British Overseas Airways Corporation flying boat en route from Lisbon to England carrying mail from Prisoners of War and several passengers. In thick fog, the plane came down on 28th Jul 1943 and several of the passengers and crew were killed. Less than 10% of the mail on board was recovered. The recovered mail received the two line cachet in purple: DAMAGED BY / FIRE IN TRANSIT.
