This cover was carried in a Western Air Express planning flying on the Salt Lake City to San Diego route, when it developed engine trouble and crashed in landing as Alhambra, on December 22nd, 1930.

About 575 lbs. of mail, charred and water soaked, was salvaged. It was forwarded from Portland, where the two-line purple cachet was applied. The letter was originally posted from Wall Street, New York, on December 12th.
