Germania – 1869
Description
The Hamburg-America steamer 'Germania', on a voyage from New York for Plymouth, Cherbourg and Hamburg with U.S. mails of Aug. 3rd 1869, was wrecked near Cape Race during the night of Aug. 7th, having gone ashore in Trepassey Bay.
All mails and passengers ex 'Germania' were saved, and left St John's Newfoundland on Aug. 14th by steamer 'Cimbria.' This is one of three covers so far recorded, the other two being in the United States.
