Description

The 'City of Vera Cruz' was a steamer bound for Havana from New York which foundered in a hurricane off the Florida coast on August 9th 1880. 29 passengers were saved on board and a crew of 50, of which only 25 in all were saved.

A bag containing letters for Cuba and Mexico posted in Paris on August 13th, and another bag with New York letters of August 25th were subsequently washed ashore at St Augustine, Florida.
