Description

First and second stages – two stages in the salvage of mails from SS Oregon.

The SS Oregon, Cunard Line, carrying 568 bags of mail, was lost in collision with a schooner, the Charles H Morse, between 3 and 4am. in the morning of March 14th 1886, off Fire Island, Northeast of New York. The newspaper wrapper is from mail taken of the vessel before she sank. The cover is from one of the 461 bags of mail which were washed up along the coast from Portland to cape hatteras.
