The period of the first World War provides a good deal of material for the student of wreck covers, in fact too much, because so little of it can be linked up with known casualties. It also introduced a new class of cachet applied to mail intended for ships lost in action subsequent to the date of posting.
Here is a cover addressed to the Chaplain of H.M.S. Monmouth, a cruiser lost during the Battle of Coronel, the same action as H.M.S. Good Hope was lost. Mail awiating delivery to ships companies was marked
SHIP LOST
So far as is know this marking was not used on any other occasion. For more details see 'H.M.S. Good Hope'
