This group of envelopes with hand drawn illustrations have all been addressed to the same person and it is interesting to see his change of address and rank over the years. A hand drawn illustrated envelope of a badly injured soldier (possibly from the Crimea War) studying a portrait of Queen Victoria. The portrait has been formed with a perforate penny red stamp with check letters in all four corners. The letter is addressed to Major Thornton and is date stamped 10 March 1879. The drawing is almost certainly a political statement on the horrors of war and the demands made on people by their sovereign and government.
