This envelope from Saint Paul, Minn. and addressed to New York, this envelope was being carried by United Air Lines on air mail route AM 1 out of Oakland, CA. On landing at La Guardia, Pilot Douglas Wilson overshot the runway and finished up in Flushing Bay. The mail was recovered and forwarded with one of two cachets in purple: DELAY DUE TO AIR MAIL / INTERRUPTION NEAR / NEW YORK N.Y. / APR 11 1942. The other cachet used included the word “DAMAGE” IN PLACE OF “DELAY”.
