The S.S. Tasmania was owned by the Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Company and registered in Greenock. She became stranded on Monachi Rocks, South Corsica on 18th April 1887 on a voyage out of Bombay bound for Marseilles and London. All passengers were saved but nineteen crew were lost. Some of the mails and a quantity of Indian Parcel Post was salvaged by divers. This image shows a wrapper addressed to Whitfield King & Co. of Ipswich with a purple 3-line cachet SAVED FROM THE WRECK / OF THE / “TASMANIA”. A small unused postal stationery envelope of Chamba (Indian Feudatory State) was in the package enclosed by this wrapper.
