In may 1844, the Maltese cross obliterators were replaced by numeral cancellers issued to post towns and many sub-post towns in alphabetical order. Bath received the number '53', here used near the end of the first month. The wrapper was received in Bristol the following day receiving a Bristol double arc postmark dated May 31st 1844.
