1986-031-02 A photograph of a Zeppelin in its hangar in Germany. The notice in large letters on the front of the hangar states “Rauchen Verbotten”, No Smoking for the obvious reason that Zeppelins were filled with highly flammable hydrogen gas. This gas, which is much lighter than the oxygen/nitrogen mix that makes up our atmosphere, allowed these large objects to float above the ground. But the trade off was that they became very susceptible to fire. Today’s airships use the much safer, but more expensive, helium gas.
